Bishop | Cleric
Character Profile
Introduction
If you are playing a one shot or short campaign, perhaps you'd like to choose from some characters I have prepared in advance, to reduce the time required in character creation, and get into playing faster. One of the characters you might choose to play is Bishop, the Human, Cleric (War Domain, if you're high enough level to choose a subclass).
You can play as Bishop, or even just use his character as a template and change some things like name, gender, ability scores, level, subclass (etc). If you'd like to play as Bishop, contact your assigned Dungeon Master, and they will make the character available to you.
Character Backstory
In his youth, Bishop was a criminal and a thug. An orphan in a busy city who didn't even know his real name, he took work as a 'tough' in street gangs and guilds wherever he could find it, he was not particularly discerning when it came to who he harmed or why.
It wasn't long before Bishop went too far, killing a man - and a well connected man at that, a noble in fact. Bishop was promptly arrested and sent away to a prison in a far away land.
Bishop had not been particularly devout in his youth, the thought of gods hadn't really occurred to him. However, once he was sent to jail he started to learn the names of the gods, and would pray to a different one each night. On one particular night he was praying to Tyr, there was a great storm which washed away some of the foundation of the prison, causing his cell wall to topple down and allowing him to escape. He saw this as divine intervention and, therefore, saw no issue with his escaping. From that day he took the name Bishop and decided to become a devout follower of Tyr - god of Justice - for the rest of his days.
Character Personality
Although he tried very hard to learn all the teachings of Tyr, he struggles with the minutia and details, and he reconciles this by instead believing in divine intervention and signs to show him the way - whether they are actual signs or not. He is devout (or at least what he considers devout) almost to the point of fanaticism; believing in divine justice for all mortal souls. Those of a goodly nature are likely to receive insistent encouragement to follow Tyr or another goodly god, but those of wicked nature should come to fear Bishop's wrath.
Bishop genuinely desires to serve Tyr faithfully, though he usually finds ways to do this that are pleasing to him - and these are often violent in nature. Many would argue this is him just going back to what he knew (as a street tough) just with a thin veil of "holiness" over the top of it, however that wouldn't account for Bishop's divine clerical powers.
Character Description
Bishop is a large, strong human man and a capable fighter. He carries an over-sized mace (uses a 'maul' stat block) which he uses as an overly heavy walking staff much of the time - he is just as likely to try to beat an enemy to death with his great mace than he is to cast any clerical spells. He wears a large black cloak with a red interior which always seems to be billowing, even when not in any significant wind, and he most often wears the hood pulled up over his head.
