Ragnar White-Eye | Barbarian
Character Profile
Introduction
If you are playing a one-shot or short campaign, perhaps you'd like to choose from some characters I have prepared in advance, to reduce the time required in character creation, and get into playing faster. One of the characters you might choose to play is Ragnar White-Eye, the Human, Barbarian (Path of the Berserker, if you're high enough level to choose a subclass).
You can play as Ragnar, or even just use his character as a template and change some things like name, gender, ability scores, level, subclass (etc). If you'd like to play as Ragnar, contact your assigned Dungeon Master, and they will make the character available to you.
Character Backstory
Ragnar journeyed from distant shores with his Berserker raiding party to raid these lands. However, as only a relatively small force, they came upon a superior army and suffered devastating casualties. Ragnar was the only survivor, and just barely.
Ragnar did not see this as a blessing, however. For his people believe that in order to gain a seat in the halls of Ysgard, they must die in glorious battle, to a willing, living foe. After he recovered he scoured the land looking for such a 'glorious battle' but was unable to find one. One of the conditions of his religion is that he must not deliberately lose a battle, and he also cannot goad a peaceful enemy into battle if they don't want to. The 'living' foe is an important distinction too, for if he dies to undead, he does not believe he gets to go to Ysgard (whether he actually does or not is another story).
Ragnar now wanders the countryside, taking jobs in adventuring parties and the like. The more dangerous the better, as far as he's concerned.
Character Personality
Ragnar is generally fairly easy-going and enjoys a good hearty drink and a strong laugh. However, his eyes really light up when it looks like he might be in for a fight - particularly if he believes his foe might be capable of defeating him. He will be eager to help an adventuring party with a quest, so long as the quest is likely to involve some form of combat.
He is - however - deathly afraid of undead. If he is killed by undead, Ragnar believes he does not get passage to Ysgard, so he does not wish to engage in battles with the undead if he feels there is even the slightest chance he might lose.
In somber, drunken moments, Ragnar will reveal that he thinks he is cursed for some long forgotten deed (or some deed that you can come up with for him), and thinks this is why he cannot die in battle, and why he will die peacefully in bed (a terrible fate in his eyes). If revived from being knocked out, Ragnar will let out a frustrated shout, which has just a twinge of expectation or resignation in its tone.
Some who know him well believe that what Ragnar truly needs isn't a good death, but a good and meaningful life.
Character Description
Ragnar is a tall, strong and imposing figure. Despite his middle age he is still undoubtedly large and strong, with thick, sturdy limbs and huge hands. He has sandy brown hair which he ties into a topknot, and a long beard which he plaits. Both are showing streaks of grey, but more-so the beard. He wears a fur cloak and basic leather clothing, and he carries two battle-axes into battle (one in each hand). Ragnar is covered in scars, the most pronounced of which is over his right eye, which has taken its vision away and left the eye itself milky white (hence his name).
